PLUG IN & VIRTUAL
INSTRUMENT DETAILS: |
|
Giga Studio/ Player 3: This is the most-used professional sampling
library today. Many soundtracks & film scores are cut using Giga. This system is so large that it runs on a separate
computer (s). My current sound library includes an incredibly accurate Bosendorfer
grand piano (3
gig of audio) , various other pianos, all sorts of percussion, various
real B3's, various real solo and ensemble strings, all sorts of basses,
woodwinds, brass, world instruments. No looping or "dumbing-down" like with
keyboard workstations- these sounds are massive and all 24 bit.
|
|
BFD Acoustic Drum Module
2 /
1.5 : BFD is the largest and most used
drum plug in the professional recording industry. My BFD has also been
expanded with The Funk/Jazz library. This provides about 100 gigabytes
of great 24 bit multi-mic'ed drum sounds that respond almost exactly
like real acoustic drums (when programmed properly). Take it from
me...I play acoustic kit a lot on sessions, and ...often, this gives a
better, more easily edited result. (Great for transparent replacement
of a lackluster snare or kick drum in a live kit, too) |
|
Melodyne Studio 3| Melodyne Studio:
The grand poo-bah
of tuning / timing programs. Melodyne is
one of the reasons that you never hear out-of-tune or out-of-time singers/players on
current music. (it's definitely not because they sing or play
better these days).
Detailed tuning, polyphonic
tuning & quantize /time correction, tempo shifting. All parts can be tightened
& tuned up to perfection. Melodyne is heavily used on a bazillion
major recordings and is hands-down the best tuning and time-correction
program currently available anywhere.
|
|
Antares Autopitch 4
/ Evo 6 Another
more notorious poo-bah of tuning plug-ins. Combining
with any decent performance
can become a perfect performance. An
otherwise great guitar solo with just one bad note bend now is easily zwee-dooed or even turned into a car horn. You've certainly
heard this plug-in abused at 100% for
years...the famous "Cher" effect that's still so prevalent with
marginal hip-hop singers....and almost as noticeable on new country
cds. |
|
PSP Plug
Ins
: great sounding
"tube-ish" plug-ins for compression and mastering |
|
Acid Loops:
These are
percussion and drum loops that follow the tempo of your song. For
example, they can be anything from the full backing track to just a
maraca or tambourine playing 16ths. Acid
loops are involved heavily (and sometimes totally create) most of your
major hip-hop and pop grooves of today. (Think it's real instruments
and real musicians?...guess again!) I've built a decent sized
library of these, and use them tastefully (hopefully) to support and
drive the rhythm on some smooth jazz, r&b and pop stuff.
Everything in moderation! (see keywords: yo, change it up) |
|
Sonitus Suite: this is a suite of very good plug
ins: features a great multi-band compressor, gates, eqs,
etc. I use this a lot. Full automation recall on these, too (10+ in all) |
|
Sound Forge & CD Architect:
This is a great pair of programs for
mastering...period. I've been using some form of this software since
1997. Includes tools for getting the best out of your master, as well
as encoding your all-important ISRC numbers. (a must for
worldwide digital download tracking) |
| Roland
Varipitch: 2 more good
pitch correction plug ins. These have several other effects that are
interesting for vocals, and for certain troublesome types of tuning,
they are quick and quite groovy. |
|
Audio Quantize: this
allows decent acoustic drum / percussion performances to become
perfect tracks, by moving drum parts onto or closer to the beat...just as MIDI has
done for years. Combined with Melodyne which is used for for timing &
tuning pitched instruments, most reasonable performances
can be brought out of the garage. |
|
Tube Front End: Why
use tube pre-amps and compressors to get the signal into the computer?
Because it sounds great! And, by tweaking plate voltages and ohm
settings on the pre-amps, you can get the most out of a mic or
instrument. |
|
The real deal with all this stuff is this:
Combined with lots
of traditional experience, I know that if you don't put the time into
constantly studying and experimenting with this ever-expanding
software, you're basically useless. So, if I list it, I know
how to utilize it to make music! |
